Dear Family,
I apologize for sending this message in such an impersonal way, but I feel this is the most effective way to reach our large extended family, while keeping pace with life and taking on a new challenge. (No, I am NOT pregnant!)
I am writing to ask for your faith and prayers in my behalf and to tell you that I have been diagnosed with a treatable case of breast cancer, which has a very positive outlook for full recovery. It’s also helpful that we caught it early… Thank heavens! I will have surgery on Wednesday (a lumpectomy–just removing the cancerous tumor). Then, after a three-week recovery period, I will begin a six week course of short, daily radiation treatments.
The radiation is expected to leave me feeling tired for a time, and I will have some localized sunburn-like side affects–sounds mild vs. chemo. I’m told I won’t need chemo since this cancer is very different from more common breast cancers that spread rapidly. There is a small chance that surgery could reveal that this initial diagnosis is wrong.
I am dealing really well with all this. I had plenty of time to wrestle with the realities while I was waiting for the diagnosis. I almost feel like celebrating since this cancer is very treatable! The Spirit has given me continuous comfort, I have quickly come to feel a lot of peace, and so has Lee. He’s a rock.. I feel like I could face anything with him by my side. It’s great to have that kind of confidence in my husband. He’s amazing. But you already knew that! The kids are at peace and doing well with the news.
I also want to give a huge THANKS to my brother STEVE for opening doors, pulling strings, and helping me get efficient care from extremely capable doctors! He has been a great blessing!
Thanks for your patience with my choice to tell you about this by email. While I look forward to eventually talking to each of you, please know that I will definitely keep you posted!
I sure love you all! Thanks for your faith and prayers.
Love,
Annette
